We have been busy cutting more branches of Colorado Spruce and Scotch Pine to manufacture more grave blankets for pick up, delivery or UPS to locations across the country.

Remember that we locally delivery Christmas trees or grave blankets inexpensively so that a lot of the hassle of getting the tree home is out of the way.

If you dread trying to place the tree in its stand straight, we can do that for you too so that a delivery and setting your tree up is only $40, then all you have to do is decorate it to your taste.

As I’ve said before, all our trees are Ohio grown and are not painted with a water-based paint called Greenzit in order to market the trees as a dark green which is not their natural color.

Wreaths, roping and boughs are all ready for your holiday decorating as well as a good assortment of artificial wreaths with bows of bright red, cranberry red, burgundy or royal blue.

Without a doubt, the cooler mini lights are better on your tree then the larger incandescent type but better yet, LED lights emit almost no heat and are so much longer lasting and energy misers compared to regular incandescent lights.

I always enjoy selling trees when a large group of children come with their parents as the kids always seem to want a tree at least two feet taller than the ceiling will allow!

I remind the children that a big tree means little presents and a little tree means big presents for Christmas but they don’t seem to believe me.

Remember our layaway program for cut trees so that if you’re not ready for your tree, we’ll tag it and hold it for you to pick-up (or delivery) later.

The way it keeps snowing, it looks as though we’re in for an old-fashioned white Christmas.

See you soon,

Tom

It doesn’t seem possible but we’re already past Thanksgiving and going into winter’s icy grips.

Our Ohio grown cut trees are ready for customers inspection with choices of Scotch Pine, White Pine, Concolor Fir, Douglas Fir and Fraser Fir.

None of our Scotch Pine trees are painted to give them the dark green color of summer as we believe our customers are looking for a more natural look.

Many times, pines are painted with a dark green dye to make them look fresher to hide the fact that they were actually cut in October!

For those of you that are quite fussy about your tree, we have a layaway program in that you can select your tree early to get the best selection and then pick it up or get it delivered when you’re ready.

A fresh cut across the trunk before placing the tree in the stand will “unseal” the tree’s vascular system to draw water up by capillary action to keep the tree fresher.

Remember to not let the water bowl run dry as sometimes the tree will not take water again.

The best Christmas tree stand I have ever used is one called Cinco, and, it’s made in the United States!

Its high density plastic is exceptionally strong and its design makes it very easy to secure a tree, even a tree with the notorious crooked trunk!

Cinco is the only tree stand we sell because of its superior quality and design renders it the only tree stand you may ever have to buy!

Let us know when you buy your tree if you want a fresh cut on the trunk but do not request one unless you’re going to place it in a stand with water the same day as the trunk will reseal after a few hours.

We don’t charge for the cutting service as we’re never charged for it since my family has been in the Christmas tree business since 1956!

Before I go, I want to tell you a short story.

Since 1977, I have customers who travel from one of the Cleveland suburbs to buy two cut trees.

I asked them why they bought two trees and the reply was that “I was raised Catholic (Kristine) and Marcus is Jewish so that one tree is the Christmas tree and the other the Chanukah Bush!”

Kris said it really drove their new neighbors crazy when they saw ribbons and roping on the outdoor fence and a Menorah in the window as they just couldn’t figure out what was going on!

Hope to see you soon
Tom

Fall’s last hurrah is nearly gone with the ornamental Flowering Pears finally starting to lose their leaves.

The late leaf drop of Flowering Pear is one of the reasons it is susceptible to breakage from early snows like this past week although fortunately, the snow didn’t seem quite heavy and wet enough to do damage to the trees.

Things in the growing area of the nursery are just about shut down although were still erecting windbreaks in our exposed Rhododendron-Azalea garden in Wolf Creek Gardens and getting ready to spray Liquid Fence once temperatures warm a little.

I’ve been busy preparing grave blankets (with help, of course) and other decorations for delivery and customer pick ups.

We have a wide range of artificial wreaths on display in addition to the array of live wreaths we’ll have for your viewing beginning Saturday afternoon long with greens and white pine roping for all your holiday decorating.

Poinsettias are still “cooking” so that they won’t be available until Saturday November 29th as they’re a little “behind schedule” now so their peak of bloom and freshness will be reserved for closer to Christmas.

Our locally grown cut Christmas trees will be available this coming week with Fraser Fir being the favorite of most customers because of the lack of shedding needles and the tree’s shapeliness similar to an “old-fashioned” Christmas tree in that it has more open spaces to hang ornaments.

I prefer Ohio grown Fraser Fir as they are not quite as thick as the North Carolina grown Frasers and are oh-so-much fresher!

Don’t forget to count your blessings this Thanksgiving!

See you later,
Tom

  Going "Green"...

A blog entry by Tom Dayton....
all Going Green blogs

December  2008
It wasn’t so long ago that most homes had a real tree of either pine, spruce or fir as a Christmas tree.  A large part of the fun was going on the hunt for the perfect tree to fit a particular spot in a corner or in front of a window.

Now the vast majority of homeowners elect to have an artificial tree as it alleviates the hassle from having to look for the tree, getting it home, securing it on the tree stand and finally the chore of decorating it!

Real Christmas trees though are really good for the environment in that during their short life before being cut down, they purify the air, prevent soil erosion, and provide shelter for wildlife.  Then their end after the Christmas season can still result in use as a bird sanctuary when a tree is staked up near a bird feeder in winter, mulch for plants in the landscape or garden or cut off branches laid over dormant valuable tender perennials to protect the plants from severe and frequent freeze-thaw cycles.

While real Christmas trees do take inputs of energy to produce from mowing the fields to harvesting and to transport, nevertheless they don’t require large amounts of petroleum to use in their manufacture as do artificial trees.

The other benefit of a real tree over artificial is that it is produced in the United States, as the planting, trimming, mowing and harvesting is all accomplished by American workers.

Without a doubt, artificial trees are much more “convenient” than real trees and do save a lot of time getting to the end result – a decorated tree.

However, an artificial tree is imported, will never purify the air, provide shelter for wildlife or mulch for the garden and they look the same, year after year.  An artificial tree will never replace the family togetherness of searching for the tree and the fun of cutting it down at a local Christmas tree farm or searching for it at a Christmas tree lot.

I always wondered that if convenience and time saving is all so important as far as the Christmas tree is concerned, why bother with one at all?  After all isn’t sharing and giving,  family togetherness and a real tree part of an old-fashioned Christmas?

Merry Christmas,
Tom

  Virus-Indexing
Virus-indexing is one of the newest developments here at Dayton’s.  What is virus indexing?  Simply, it is the process by which viruses that cause plants to lose their strength and vigor, are identified and removed. Virus-indexed plants are healthier and more vigorous which means better growth and more blooms for you! While not all of Dayton’s perennials and annuals are virus indexed, most are, so that we can achieve our goal by the spring of 2008 to have all our plants virus-indexed!
