Description:
All of these varieties enjoy moist shady locations, some will tolerate some sun if the soil is very moist as on the edge of a pond or stream.  With their open texture and graceful appearance, ferns make a wonderful counterpoint to flowering perennials.

Botanical Name: Athyrium
Type: Fern
Soil Preference: This fern type prefers moist, well-drained to loamy soils with a neutral, acidic or slightly alkaline pH
Light
Requirements:
Full shade to partial sun
Attributes: Great for naturalizing or to be planted near a pond or stream. 
Pests: Slugs and snails may chew on the fronds.  Aphids and grubs may also cause problems.
Diseases: Gray mold
Good Companion Plants: Astilbe, Heartleaf Brunnera, Columbine, Coral Bells, Ginger, Hosta, Lenten Rose, Ligularia, Lilyturf, Northern Sea Oats Grass, Black Snakeroot, Sweet Woodruff

Care:

Remove dead foliage in early winter or early spring.  New growth will come up from ground each year.

Description: A stunning addition to the Athyrium genus, 'Branford Beauty' is an interspecific hybrid of the Japanese Painted Fern (A. niponicum 'Pictum') and the red stemmed Lady Fern (A. filix-femina). This hybrid sports silvery gray fronds held upright by reddish stems. It forms an attractive clump and is great for massing in woodland areas or used as a specimen plant.

Description:  Native to North America, this deciduous fern is common to moist sites throughout the northern hemisphere. It is characterized by lush, finely textured, medium green fronds with an arching habit. They radiate gracefully out from the center of the crown. New leaves are produced throughout the season for a continually fresh look. At maturity, the stems turn dark red.

Description:  Looking much like prehistoric parsley, this fun and fantastic fern is easier than it looks. Not finicky about much, this is truly a classy lady. Easy in the garden and a great fluffy filler in shady pots. Distinctive and deciduous it joins its cousin, 'Dre's Dagger' as a unique addition to your customer's garden.

Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum'

Description:  2004 Perennial Plant of the Year!  A wonderful addition to any garden!  'Pictum' presents itself as a soft metallic gray immersed with reddish and bluish-green hues, making it a great choice as a colorful foliage.Light shade produces some of the best foliage color.  Multiple landscape use includes woodland gardens, shade gardens, shade border fronts, such as a north side of a building, rock gardens, or along streams or ponds.  Also received the 2002 MNLA Growers Award

Description:  This majestic fern has stunning, lustrous silvery fronds that shimmer with contrasting red veins.  Unlike any other as it intensifies it's silvery color as the season progresses.

Athyrium otophorum 'Okanum'
Eared Lady Fernn

Description:  'Okanum' has been described as being similar to the Japanese Painted Fern but with more subtle coloring. The sturdy, arching, triangular fronds are silvery green with dark red stems. As the season progresses, the fronds deepen to solid green. Some sun will help to draw out this coloring.  This is a well-behaved, clumping fern that is right at home in woodland gardens combined with blue and gold hostas. It has received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, a very high honor.

Description:  A hybrid cross between Japanese Painted fern (A. niponicum 'Pictum') and Southern Lady Fern (A. felix-femina) with stunning silvery fronds that grow broad and tall. It's rigid upright clump form is bound to leave you with a haunting impression. Combines well with blue leaved Hosta, Heuchera and Epimedium.
