Description:

This fragrant, evergreen ground cover would makes a nice addition to the landscape.  The bright red berries are quite persistent and stay on for months at a time.
 
Common Name: Wintergreen, Checkerberry, Teaberry
Botanical Name: Gaultheria
Type: Evergreen Ground Cover
Soil Preference: Will tolerate drought, sand and dry soils.  Prefers a well-drained soil with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.
Light Requirements: Partial Sun, Partial Shade, Full Shade
Attributes: Native to Ohio, great as a ground cover or in the rock garden
Pests: None serious.  But, small mammals may eat the stems.
Diseases: None serious
Care: Suppress weeds around plants.

Description:  When bruised or cut, the foliage emits a strong wintergreen scent.  Small pinkish-white flowers appear in summer followed by scarlet red berries that are quite persistent.
