Purple Rock Cress
Aubrieta

 


Description:

A perennial favorite, Aubrieta has long been treasured for its delightful spring show of brightly colored flowers. This free-flowering cultivar has 3/4 inch, velvety-purple to violet-blue blossoms. The evergreen leaves form low mats of foliage which should be trimmed back after flowering to maintain a compact form.  Try planting this delightful spring treasure between stepping stones, along pathways, or in the crevices of stone walls.
 
Common Name: Purple Rock Cress
Botanical Name: Aubrieta
Type: Perennial Ground Cover
Soil Preference: Well-drained soil is best.  Plants will thrive in the limey soils of the midwest. 
Light Requirements: Best in full sun or light shade.
Attributes: Ground cover, good rock garden plant
Pests: n/a
Diseases: n/a
Good Companion Plants: Basket-of-Gold, Candytuft, Hens & Chicks, Creeping Phlox, Rock Cress, Snow-in-Summer, Stonecrop
Care: Foliage which should be trimmed back after flowering to maintain a compact form.  Division can be done in fall.

Fertilize with Plant-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer every few weeks during the growing season (see water & fertilizer schedule)
