Echinacea

Description:

The flowers are shaped like a Black-Eyed Susan's with sturdy orange-bronze cones and petals in shades of pink, red, purple and white. They do best in full sun but will take some shade, and are tolerant of hot, dry, windy sites.  Plant with Rudbeckia, Stokesia, Ornamental Grasses and Salvia.  Also best if used in borders, meadows, butterfly gardens, masses, small gardens and containers.  The dead flower stems will remain erect well into the winter and, if flower heads are not removed, are often visited by goldfinches who perch on or just below the blackened cones to feed on the seeds.

Common Name: Purple Coneflower, Black Sampson, Hedge Coneflower
Botanical Name: Echinacea
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Light, loamy soils are best but coneflowers will grow in any well-drained soil. Once established, they are quite drought tolerant.
Light Requirements: Full Sun.   Though they will tolerate light shade, fewer flowers will be produced and the plants will be weakened.
Attributes: 1998 Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association.  Deer resistant.  Attracts butterflies and birds, especially gold finches.  Suitable for dry flowers.  Great as cut flowers!   Heat and drought tolerant.  Good for naturalizing a large area.  These plants are long-lived, low-maintenance and easy to grow.
Pests: Japanese Beetles, Thrips
Diseases: Root Rot, Mildew, Wilt
Good Companion Plants: Black-Eyed Susan, Butterfly Weed, Daylily, Garden Phlox, Red Valerian, Russian Sage
Care: Division of its clumps can be made in the spring every 3-4 years, but not necessary.  Best propagation time is spring. Cut back dead foliage in spring.  Deadhead after blooming.  Fertilize with Plant-tone or Miracle Gro.
