Hosta

Description: Hostas, the ultimate shade plant! They demand little of you besides a bit of shade and will come back year after year. Hostas give a blast of bold texture as well as a variety of leaf colors, patterns and shapes. Hosta foliage now comes in an impressive array of color: hues of green (of course), gold to nearly yellow, blue and almost gray along with a large array of stripes and variegations. Leaves can vary from round or oval to heart-shaped and come in every size. Never plant Hostas together that are similar in form, color and texture. They should differ in at least one of these elements. Complement large, bold Hosta foliage with ferns, grasses, sedges (especially gold or variegated), Irises (for their upright spiky effect), Astilbes, and Dicentra (for their foliage as well as their flowers.) Our favorites include: Brim Cup, Montana Aureo-marginata, Great Expectations, Spilt Milk, Sum & Substance, Frances Williams, Kabitan, and Love Pat.

Soil Preference:	Will grow in moist soils. Prefers a neutral, well-drained soil. Tolerant of many different types of soil conditions.
Light Requirements:	Partial Sun, Partial Shade, Full Shade (some varieties can handle sun, see below)
Attributes:	Easy to grow, good container plants, ground cover plant
Pests:	Slugs, snails
Diseases:	Crown rot, root rot, anthracnose, leaf spot, gray mold, impatiens necrotic spot virus.
Good Companion Plants:	Astilbe, Bleeding Heart, Foamflower, Hardy Geranium, Lilyturf, Black Snakeroot
Care:	Remove flower heads when flowers are spent. Division can be done in spring or fall. Planting Instructions: Perennials

	Description: Easily recognizable at a single glance; has one of the best ruffled leaf edges of any hosta. Green hosta with large, nearly round, horizontally held leaves with prominent deep piecrust edges. Even young plants show the attractive ruffling. This plant is named for the pebbled streets of Clovelly, England because mature leaves show some pebbling or dimpling on the surface. Quickly forms a neat, open mound of foliage with good substance. Pale lavender, tubular flowers are produced on 18-24" scapes in midsummer.
