Lilyturf
Liriope

Description:

Charming, attractive violet-blue flowers give this plant it's charm!  Useful in the landscape as a ground cover, edger or accent plant.  Flowers are followed by blue-black berrylike fruits in the fall.   Will grow well underneath trees or around shrubs but will not tolerate foot traffic.  This plant is considered mostly allergy free and causes little or no allergy problems in most people.

Common Name: Lilyturf, Border Grass, Blue Lilyturf
Botanical Name: Liriope
Type: Grass-like Perennial
Soil Preference: This plant tolerates some drought and some salt and will grow in moist soil but prefers well-drained, loamy sandy or clay soils with a pH of acidic to alkaline (6.8-7.7)
Light Requirements: Sun, Part Shade, Shade
Attributes: This plant is considered mostly allergy free.  Good for mass plantings, ground cover and naturalizing.  Great for bordering a sidewalk!  Also good for naturalizing and cut flowers.
Pests: Slugs and snails
Diseases: none known
Good Companion Plants: Anemone, Coral Bells, Foamflower, Jacob's Ladder, Russian Sage
Care: Fertilize every 4 months with slow-release Osmocote or fertilize every few weeks with Plant-tone or Miracle Gro.

Shear this plant back in spring with a sharp lawn mower blade.  This will encourage a flush of new growth.  Do this before the new growth emerges!  Liriope is easily propagated by division in the early spring.
