Sedum/
Stonecrop

Sedum

Description:

Sedum is one of the most popular perennials grown in American gardens because it is very easy to grow and hardy in most areas of the country. This broad group of plants offers much for both perennial and rock gardens.  Some varieties grow in a mat-like fashion, while others are best used as an upright ornamental specimen.  All have thick, fleshy, succulent-like leaves and divide well.  Most Bloom August-September (or later).  The seed heads of the taller varieties provide excellent winter interest and food for birds.

Common Name: Stonecrop, Sedum
Botanical Name: Sedum
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Well-drained; can tolerate dry soils.  Because of its thick, succulent leaves which can store water, sedum is drought tolerant. It should be sited in average to poor soil that is well-drained. Plants grown in rich soil tend to be lanky and open.
Light Requirements: Full Sun to light shade
Attributes: Late flowering; easy to grow, rabbit resistant, salt tolerant, dried flower, border, drought tolerant
Pests: n/a
Diseases: n/a
Good Companion Plants: Aster, Blue Mist Shrub, Butterfly Bush, Daylily, Black-Eyed Susan, Gayfeather, Fountain Grass, Russian Sage, Tickseed
Care:

Cut back dead stalks in spring.  Divide sedum every 3-4 years to maintain its compact growth habit. Older plants tend to split in the center if they have not been divided. Pinching the taller varieties back by half in early summer will also help prevent them from splitting.

Planting Instructions:   Perennials

Description:  This one's destined to become a classic! Setting the standard by which all other dark foliage sedums will be judged, the brand new 'Black Jack' PPAF boasts a superior upright habit and the deepest purple foliage (so dark you'll think it's black). Don't be deceived by the green and light purple foliage that first emerges in spring. It will quickly darken to deep purple.   Unlike other purple sedums which have a sprawling habit, this one displays thick, broad leaves on strong, stout, upright stems. It is a sport of 'Matrona' with the same habit and more brilliantly colored pink flowers. The flower heads can measure a massive 8 inches across!
