Abies


Description:

Firs prefer an organic soil in a moist to well-drained area.  Roots are usually shallow and grow straight out from the trunk.  Firs are great used as a screen or specimen in the landscape.

Soil Preference: Prefers well-drained soil with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.

Diseases: Root rot

Description:  This extremely pendulous Silver Fir forms a columnar, cascading spire with a rather heavy image.  Prefers moist, cool, acid soil and protection from hot, afternoon sun. Very slow growing.

Description:  Dark green needles.  Dense pyramidal shape.  Similar but easier to grow than Fraser Fir.  Prefers moist sites and partially shaded conditions.

Abies balsamea 'Tyler Blue'
Balsam Fir
zones: 4-7
 
Description:  Blue and beautiful are the two best words to describe this plant.  The distinctive blue foliage stands out in the landscape where this pyramidal tree commands attention.  The lush needles are soft to the touch, typical of other Balsam Firs.  It is a fairly compact grower that prefers well-drained soil.  It enjoys full sun but will maintain its attractive blue color in part shade.

Abies concolor
Concolor Fir, Colorado Fir, White Fir

Description:  This may the the best Fir for the eastern US.  It prefers and makes its best growth on moist, rich, well-drained soils.  Dislikes heavy clay.  Root system is usually shallow unless grown in well-drained sandy soils.  Trees do not produce cones annually. Trees are known to live up to 500 years on native habitat. Old trees often are hollow. Pest tolerant and deer resistant. Makes a good substitute for Colorado Blue Spruce.

Fraser Fir, Southern Balsam Fir

Description:  Fraser Fir likes an organic, moist soil.  Makes one the nicest Christmas trees and is very popular! Pyramidal shape.  Tolerates occasional wetness and salt well.  The roots of the Fraser Fir are usually shallow and grow straight out from the trunk. Red squirrels love the terminal buds and seeds.

Abies koreana 'Blauer Eskimo'
Eskimo Dwarf Korean Fir

Description:  An unusual shade of gray-green needles provide the backdrop for the plentiful resin covered buds on this dwarf Fir. The flat needles are spirally arranged on short, light colored shoots, forming a uniform, tight, globe-shaped plant.  Excellent for the rock garden. Prefers moist well-drained soil. Mature size shown is 10 year size.

Abies koreana 'Silberperle'
Miniature Korean Fir

Description: An exquisite garden gem, every compact branch decorated with white buds during fall and winter. Short, wide, deep green needles, accented with silvery-white undersides, add to the plant's year-round ornamental impact. Very slow growing, just 1”/year. Will eventually take on a pyramidal form with age. Mature specimen shown, left.
