Albizia julibrissim


Native to Asia, mimosa or silk tree is a fast-growing, small to medium sized deciduous tree with a spreading, flattened, umbrella-like crown.  It is known for its fern-like leaves and fluffy pink powder puff flowersheads that cover the tree with a long summer bloom. Flowers are fragrant and attractive to bees. Flowers give way to flat, bean-like seed pods which persist into winter.

Botanical Name: Albizia
Type: Deciduous Tree
Growth Rate: Fast growing
Soil Preference: Average, well-drained soils. Prefers rich, light soils.  Tolerates a wide range of soils, including poor ones. Tolerates alkaline conditions. Tolerates drought, but best growth is with regular watering. Thrives in summer heart.
Light Requirements: Full sun to light shade
Attributes: Drought tolerant, heat tolerant
Pests: Mimosa web worm.
Diseases: Wilt is becoming a serious problem in many areas.
Other Issues: Self-seeding can produce numerouseedlings. Falling leaves, flowers and seed pods can pose significant clean-up problems if trees are planted near homes. Weak wooded limbs are susceptible to damage from strong winds and ice/snow.
Care: Fertilize with Plant-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer as recommended.
