Description:

A much prized plant because of its low-maintenance and the popularity of the berries to wildlife.  Chokeberry thrives in moist soil but will tolerate dry soil in sun or partial shade.  Native to the state of Ohio and eastern North America

 

Common Name: Red Chokeberry, Black Chokeberry
Botanical Name: Aronia
Type: Deciduous shrub
Growth Rate: Moderate
Soil Preference: Will tolerate some drought and will grow in dry soils but prefers well-drained/loamy, sandy or clay soils with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.  Melanocarpa types will grow in occassionally moist to wet soils.
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade
Attributes: Wetlands plant, attracts birds and butterflies, plants serve as hosts for butterfly larvae
Pests: None serious
Diseases: None serious

Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima'
Red Chokeberry

Description:  Received a Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for 2000 and its not hard to see why.  'Brilliantissima' is very hardy, transplants well and it's exceptional fall foliage is bright red.    The berries are clustered and brilliant red in fall.

Foliage Color: Green, red fall color
Height: 6-8'
Spread: 3-4'

Aronia melanocarpa ('Viking')
Black Chokeberry
zones 4-9
 
Description:  Black Chokeberry is lower growing than 'Brilliantissima'.   The fall foliage is red and purple and the shiny, blackish round berries are well liked by animals of all types.  And just like it's cousin, the Red Chokeberry, it transplants well and is very hardy.

Bloom Time: Spring
Foliage Color: Green, red/purple fall color
Height: 3-6'
Spread: 4-6'
