Beautyberry

Description:

Beautyberry is pretty much maintenance free and grows easily in full sun or dappled shade in a variety of soils.  The violet berries are very popular with the birds!   Looks great in a naturalized setting with Oaks, Pines and darker-leaved shrubs such as Sand Cherry and Holly.  (Pollen may cause a slight irritation to allergy sufferers.)

 

Common Name: Beautyberry
Botanical Name: Callicarpa
Type: Deciduous shrub
Soil Preference: Tolerates drought and a little salt and will grow in dry soils as well as well-drained/loamy, sandy or clay soils with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline (less than 6.8 - 7.7)
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade
Attributes: Fragrant, attracts birds, almost pest and disease resistant
Pests: Mostly pest free except caterpillars may sometimes chew on foliiage
Diseases: None serious
Care: Old wood should be pruned heavily in late fall to early spring because flowers are fruits are produced on new growth.

Fertilize with Holly-tone, Plant-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer at the recommended rates.

Description:  'Profusion' received a Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society as a plant of merit.  The five foot long Willow-like leaves turn pink to orange to purple in fall.  This variety bears an abundance of violet berries that are well liked by birds.
