Description:

An upright, oval shaped shrub that looks great in the back of the shrub border or for use as a screen.  The flowers are borne on last year's stems in mid-spring and have a fragrance similar to strawberries.

All or parts of this plant are poisonous.   Pollen will cause slight allergy in certain people.

 

Common Name: Carolina Allspice, Sweetshrub, Strawberry Bush
Botanical Name: Calycanthus
Type: Deciduous shrub
Soil Preference: Will tolerate some drought, wetness and salt and will grow in dry to occassionally wet soil but prefers well-drained/loamy, sandy or clay soils with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline (less than 7.7)
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade, full shade
Attributes: Pest tolerant, will grow in moist soils, fragrant
Pests: None serious
Diseases: Bacterial crown gall will cause wart-looking growths near the soil line on the stem.  Powdery mildew also may become a problem
Care: Prune right after flowering if nessecary.  Fertilize with Holly-tone, Plant-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer at the recommended rates.

Description:  Dark green leaf color in summer, yellow in fall.   Fragrant red Magnolia-like flower in May.  This is a pest-free plant that can be meshed into any garden setting.

Bloom Time: Spring and Summer
Foliage Color: Green, yellow fall color;  fall colors are attractive; foliage is somewhat fragrant
Height: 6-10'
Spread: 6-12'
