Eastern
Redbud

Cercis canadensis

Cercis canadensis3.JPG (18385 bytes)

Description:

Eastern Redbud is a small to medium sized tree with multiple trunks (most varieties)   The heart-shaped leaves appear after the magenta pink flowers bloom in early spring.  The flowers are borne in clusters along the bare branches and make the whole tree look pinkish-purple!   Redbuds can be used as a street tree or to provide shade for a patio.  They are also useful as a spring accent since the flowers are one of the first signs of spring, opening about the time of Dogwoods and Azaleas  Redbuds grow well in full sun but will tolerate some shade.  Will also adapt to a variety of soils but does best in light, rich moist clay-rich soils.

Common Name: Eastern Redbud
Botanical Name: Cercis canadensis
Type: Deciduous Tree
Soil Preference: This plant tolerates some drought and occassional wetness but is sensitive to ozone and air pollution.  Prefers well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils with a pH preference of acidic to slightly alkaline (6.8-7.7)
Light Requirements: Sun, Part Shade
Attributes: Attracts butterflies, heart-shaped foliage
Pests: Borer, Scale, Webwormand fall.
Diseases: Canker, Verticillium Wilt, Leaf Spot
