Description:
In the garden they thrive in part shade or even full sun if given adequate moisture.  Will work great in wet, shaded or sunny locations.  The flowers have a spicy scent and attract many bees.

 

Common Name: Sweet Pepperbush, Summer Sweet
Botanical Name: Clethra
Type: Deciduous Shrub
Growth Rate: Fast
Soil Preference: Will tolerate wet soils, flooding and some salt.  Prefers a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade
Attributes: Pest tolerant, likes moist soils, wetlands plant, attracts butterflies, serves as a butterfly nectar source
Pests: none serious (mites in dry weather)
Diseases: none serious
Care: Fertilize with Holly-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer as recommended.

Description:  The white flowers are bottlebrush shaped, intensely fragrant - a valuable trait on a late flowering shrub.  The fall color is bright yellow.  This variety was a 1994 Gold Medal Plant by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for being a plant of exceptional merit.

Description:  Vibrant pink buds open to non-fading fragrant, reddish pink flowers.  Lustrous dark green foliage on a compact plant.  Yellow fall color.  This variety was a Cary (New England region) award winner for the year of 2000 because the flowers last up to 6 weeks.
