Dogwood

Cornus

Description:
Dogwoods are usually found in the shrub border to add color or as a specimen in the lawn.  It can also be grown as an "under story" tree underneath of other large trees.   They prefer a rich, deep, well-drained soil.  These plants are not recommended for heavy, wet soils.   The fruits that are produced are also a favorite of many birds as well as squirrels, rabbits and raccoons.  They can also serve as butterfly nectar sources and as hosts for butterfly larvae.

Soil Preference: Some varieties will tolerate drought and occasional wetness but all must have well-drained soil.  They prefer a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline (less than 6.8 to 7.7)
Light Requirements: Sun to partial shade (depending on type)
Attributes: Some varieties (Cornus florida, Cornus kousa, Cornus mas) attract birds and butterflies.  Some types are pest tolerant or disease resistant (see individual descriptions); Plants also serve as butterfly nectar sources and as hosts for butterfly larvae.
Pests: Aphids, borers, leaf miners, scale. (for borer prevention, see "care" section)
Diseases: Powdery mildew, anthracnose (Many varieties are resistant to mildew and anthracnose - see individual descriptions), leaf spots, bacterial leaf scorch; also sensitive to ozone air pollution
Care: Spray trunk and lower branches with Eight May 1, May 15 and May 30 (in Ohio) to prevent borer on Florida types. Avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen.  Fertilize with Holly-tone as recommended.
