Description:

A deciduous shrub noted for its colorful yellow spring flowers appearing before the foliage.  All it requires is a sunny area and well-drained soil.   It's also a very easy plant to grow and transplants well.  

 

Common Name: Forsythia, Border Forsythia, Golden Bell
Botanical Name: Forsythia
Type: Deciduous shrub
Soil Preference: Tolerates drought and will grow in dry soil but prefers well-drained, loamy or sandy soils with a pH of acidic to alkaline. (6.8-7.7)
Light Requirements: Full sun to very light shade
Attributes: Good in container plantings, the border, as a specimen or ground cover and for erosion control.
Pests: Few, if any
Diseases: none serious
Care: Prune after flowering to keep the plant compact and to thin it out.

Fertilize with Holly-tone or Plant-tone approximately April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, August 15th & October 30th.  Keep granular fertilizers off foliage and away from stems and trunks.  Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.

Description:  An upright, mounded shrub most noted for it's compact size and variegated yellow and green foliage.  It also features golden yellow flowers in spring which appear before the foliage.

Description:  NEW FOR 2004! New from France! Golden Peep is a ball of gold in the spring.  Not only does it bear a dwarf habit but but it also has excellent compact branching. The latest introduction in the Forsythia breeding program in the INRA research station in Angers, France.

Forsythia x 'Courtasol' ('Gold Tide'®)

Description:  'Gold Tide' blooms heavier and has a better shape than other Forsythia cultivars.  Produces profuse golden yellow flowers in April.  A very fast grower that will benefit from an occasional thinning out.   You can do this by cutting off old wood at ground level.

Description:  A Forsythia unlike no other!  The blooms on Goldilocks are golden yellow and have the appearance of a Liatris spike!  A true dwarf good for borders, patios and containers.

Description:  Also called 'Lynwood Gold'.  An erect, fast growing plant with brilliant deep yellow flowers on green foliage.  Thin occassionally by cutting off old wood at ground level.   Transplants well.

Forsythia ovata 'Meadow Lark'

Description:  The hardiest of all Forsythias!!  The bright yellow flowers with buds hardy to -35°F!!   Prune the flowers shoots near the old wood as soon as the flowers fade.  This pruning will keep the shrub neat and compact.

Description:  A very hardy golden flowered variety with handsome maroon foliage (shown).  'New Hampshire Gold' is a rapid grower that transplants well and likes to be thinned occassionally but cutting off old wood at ground level.
