Kalmia

U5P4C4.jpg (19911 bytes)
Kalmia latifolia 'Raspberry Glow'

Description:

Mountain Laurel is ideally suited as a landscape accent, informal hedge or border where its flowers can be enjoyed.   It is best for natural landscapes and other low-maintenance gardens where it can be allowed to grow to its natural size.    Grows 4-6" per year.

Common Name: Kalmia latifolia
Botanical Name: Mountain Laurel, Calico Bush
Type: Evergreen Shrub
Soil Preference: Will grow in dry soil.  Suitable soil is well-drained, loamy or clay.  The pH preference is acidic to neutral.  Will do best on moist, acid soils of moderate fertility and drainage and can tolerate sunny locations if moist and not allowed to dry out.
Light Requirements: Full Sun to Full Shade
Attributes: Attracts birds.  All or parts of the plant are poisonous.  Pollen causes significant allergy.
Pests: None of major concern
Diseases: Can be infected by leaf spot disease
Care: Low-maintenance.  Prune only to remove spent flower heads and dead branches.  Amending the entire bed with organic matter and peat moss will improve root growth.  Fertilize with Holly-tone approximately April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, & October 30th.  Keep granular fertilizers off foliage and away from stems and trunks.  Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.

Planting Instructions (Use Rhodo/Azalea)
