Description:
A very adaptable flowering tree that produces a punch of color in the spring and interest all summer and fall with their small, edible fruits.  New varieties of Crabapple are not messy as most fruits will dry up and fall to the ground at the size of shriveled-up raisins.

Type: Deciduous Tree
Growth Rate: Average
Soil Preference: Moist, well-drained soil on the acidic side.  Low salt tolerance.  Tolerates moderate drought.
Light Requirements: Full Sun
Attributes: Fragrant/attractive flowers; persistent attractive fruits
Pests: Aphids, fall webworm, scale, mites, tent caterpillar
Diseases: Scab, powdery mildew, rust, several canker diseases, frog-eye leaf spot, fire blight diseases.
Care: Do not over-fertilize since this could increase the incidence of disease and will cause excess sprouting. Select only from disease-resistant cultivars.

Malus baccata 'Jackii'
Jack's Siberian Crabapple

Description:  White fragrant flowers appear in spring.  Deep red fruits in late summer persist into winter.  Excellent disease resistance.  Jackii grows in moist, well-drained, acid soil in full sun locations for best flowering and disease resistance. It is not extremely drought tolerant and not really adapted to alkaline soil.

Description:  Red buds open to dark pinkish-red flowers.  Upright form when young, later rounded.  New growth is reddish-maroon maturing to dark green.  Attractive edible fruits persist into winter.  Highly resistant to apple scab.

Show Time White Flowering Crabapple

Description:  According to the Ohio State University, this is a great replacement for Prairifire.  Showtime is an excellent upright, pyramidal grower that is disease free.  The foliage is dark green with a red overcast, fuchsia-red spring flowers are followed by cherry red fruits in late summer and fall.

Recommended for street tree planting under utility lines.
