Description:
An
excellent native tree with dark green summer color and spectacular orange-scarlet fall color.  Blue fruit attracts birds and animals of all kinds.

 

Common Name: Black Gum, Sour Gum, Black Tupelo
Botanical Name: Nyssa
Type: Deciduous tree
Growth Rate: Slow
Soil Preference: Tolerates drought, flooding, ozone and salt and will grow in very dry to very wet soil.  Nyssa will also grow in well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils.  Prefers a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade
Attributes: Pest tolerant, likes moist soils, attracts birds and butterflies; serves as a host for butterfly larvae
Pests: Scale
Diseases: Canker, leaf spot
Care: Little to no pruning is necessary. Fertilize with Holly-tone as recommended.
