Sourwood

Oxydendron arboreum


Description:

A slow growing tree that adapts to any light condition but grows it's best canopy in full sun.  Oxydendrons serve as hosts for butterfly larvae.

 

Common Name: Sourwood, Sorrel Tree, Lily of the Valley Tree
Botanical Name: Oxydendron
Type: Deciduous tree
Soil Preference: Will tolerate some drought and some salt but prefers well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils with a pH of 7.0 or less (acidic)
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade
Attributes: Pest tolerant, attracts butterflies, serve as hosts for butterfly larvae
Pests: Fall webworm is sometimes prevalent but not serious, no control is needed
Diseases: Leaf spots may sometimes cause leaf defoliation.
Care: Fertilize with Holly-tone approximately April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, August 15th & October 30th.  Keep granular fertilizers off foliage and away from stems and trunks.  Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.
