Description:  A family full of easy-to-grow, adaptable shrubs with fluffy white blooms and colorful foliage.  Great for flexibility and dramatic appeal.   Plant with gold, variegated or silver foliage plants for the best effect in the landscape.

Soil Preference: Tolerates some drought and dry soil but prefers an acidic to slightly alkaline well-drained soil.
Light Requirements: Full Sun

Care:

Summer Wine forms its flower buds in later summer and then flowers in early June. The best time to prune is it after it blooms, from mid-June to mid-August.  Cease pruning in mid-august to allow time for the flower buds to form prior to winter. 

Fertilize with Holly-tone or Plant-tone as recommended.

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diablo'
Common Ninebark, Eastern Ninebark
zones 2-7
Description:  Intense reddish-purple foliage on upright arching branches.  Provides excellent color contrast when used in the border or as a hedge or screen.  Clusters of creamy white flowers appear in summer.  Full sun for best color.
Bloom Color: Creamy White
Bloom Time: Summer
Foliage Color: Purple
Height: 9-12'
Spread: 8-9'

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Little Devil'
Common Ninebark, Eastern Ninebark
zones 3-7
 
Description:  Much like Diablo but just smaller in every way; smaller leaves, smaller stature, smaller flower clusters. Leaf color is different in that its brighter red and glossy. Stems glow red & leaves turn green on the interior of the plant. Good choice for tucking in mixed borders and the foundation.
Bloom Color: White
Bloom Time: Summer
Foliage Color: Red/Burgundy

Description:  A hardy plant with lovely yellow leaves, white flowers and nice bark.  Foliage turns more green-yellow by summer.

Description:  A new dwarf variety with small, deep bronze foliage.  Bears lovely pinkish-white button-like flowers in mid summer.  Plant next to gold or variegated foliage for a great bold effect. Also plant with Black-Eyed Susan, Gold Spirea, Artemesia or Buddleia.  Thank you to Spring Meadow and Proven Winners for a great plant introduction and for their image use .
