Description:

If you like the look of Lily of the Valley or Bleeding Heart, then Pieris is for you!  This plant should be planted in a shady spot because most Pieris planted in full sun are usually covered in lacebugs.

 

Common Name: Japanese Pieris, Japanese Andromeda, Lily of the Valley shrub
Botanical Name: Pieris
Type: Evergreen shrub
Soil Preference: Tolerates some drought and will grow in dry soil as well as well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils.  Prefers a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade, full shade
Attributes: Lily of the Valley like flowers, shade tolerant
Pests: Lacebug (Lacewing fly), mites, nematodes
Diseases: None known
Care: Plant with pre-moistened peat moss.  Apply Bayer's Rhododendron & Azalea Insect & Disease Control every 6 weeks starting April 1st to control lacebugand mites. Pruning is not necessary, but if you must prune, do it immediately after the flowers fade. Fertilize with Holly-tone as recommended.

Description:  From seed collected on Yakushima, Japan, a new breed of Pieris was originated by Esveld of Holland.  A very hardy selection, 'Cavatine', is a tight growing low mound with slightly upright racemes of white flowers blooming later than other Pieris.

Description:  A compact evergreen with white, Lily-of-the-Valley-like flowers in spring. Leaves emerge pink but mature to glossy dark green.  Bead like pink buds are set in late summer for the following year.

Description:  Thick and leathery leaves open bright red, turn mahogany then to lustrous dark green.  White flowers bloom in spring.  'Red Mill' is quite insect and disease resistant and much hardier than the species.
