Description:

If you like the look of Lily of the Valley or Bleeding Heart, then Pieris is for you!  This plant should be planted in a shady spot because most Pieris planted in full sun are usually covered in lacebugs.

 

Common Name: Japanese Pieris, Japanese Andromeda, Lily of the Valley shrub
Botanical Name: Pieris
Type: Evergreen shrub
Soil Preference: Tolerates some drought and will grow in dry soil as well as well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils.  Prefers a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade, full shade
Attributes: Lily of the Valley like flowers, shade tolerant
Pests: Lacebug (Lacewing fly), mites, nematodes
Diseases: None known
Care: Plant with pre-moistened peat moss.  Apply Bayer's Rhododendron & Azalea Insect & Disease Control every 6 weeks starting April 1st to control lacebugand mites. Pruning is not necessary, but if you must prune, do it immediately after the flowers fade. Fertilize with Holly-tone as recommended.

Pieris japonica 'Cavatine'

Description:  From seed collected on Yakushima, Japan, a new breed of Pieris was originated by Esveld of Holland.  A very hardy selection, 'Cavatine', is a tight growing low mound with slightly upright racemes of white flowers blooming later than other Pieris.

Description:  Burgundy red new foliage flushing continuously throughout the season turning dark green with age. Racemes of pink to rose red blooms in early spring.  Best in semi-shade in slightly acidic soil.  Can grow to 6’ in time if left untrimmed.

Description:  A neat, compact shrub with a yellowish-green variegation on the margins of the gray-green leaves; new leaves are pink. Small, bell-shaped white flowers add to the beauty. A good low hedge plant.

Description:  A compact evergreen with white, Lily-of-the-Valley-like flowers in spring. Leaves emerge pink but mature to glossy dark green.  Bead like pink buds are set in late summer for the following year.

Description:  Thick and leathery leaves open bright red, turn mahogany then to lustrous dark green.  White flowers bloom in spring.  'Red Mill' is quite insect and disease resistant and much hardier than the species.

Description:  Sarabande' provides ample year-round ornament with its drooping chains of greenish white flower buds in winter, its profusion of pure white urn-shaped flowers in late winter or early spring, and its dark glossy-green laurel-like leaves. The flower clusters resemble those of lily of the valley. This selection slowly forms a small rounded shrub of less than half the height of most other forms.
