Description:
This family is quite diverse in its members.  Weeping cherries are included in every top 10 weeping tree list because of their spectacular blooming capabilities and lovely, arching shape.  Others are grown for their dramatic purple foliage.  Fertilize regularly with a slow release nitrogen fertilizer to keep plants vigorous.
 
Common Name: Flowering Cherry, Flowering Plum, Flowering Almond
Botanical Name: Prunus
Type: Deciduous Tree
Growth Rate: Mixed, see plant descriptions
Soil Preference: Tolerates drought and a little salt.  Will grow in dry soils.  Prefers a well-drained soil and is not too fussy about pH.  Soil can be acidic, neutral or alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full sun
Attributes: Weeping shaped, beautiful blooms
Pests: Japanese Beetles, aphids, borers, scale, mealy bugs, tent caterpillars, browsing deer, fall webworm
Diseases: Powdery mildew, canker, leaf spot, bacterial leaf scorch.  Black knot can cause black swellings or galls on the branches.
Care:

Use Eight to protect foliage from Japanese Beetle damage.  Fertilize regularly with Holly tone, Plant tone or Miracle Gro.

Sand Cherry, Purpleleaf Plum, Purpleleaf Cherry

Description:  The foliage is intensely reddish-purple and stays effective throughout summer.   The flowers are single, pink and fragrant, borne after the leaves have developed in April or early May.  Fast growing.  Trim anytime.
Bloom Color: Pink

Foliage Color: Red-purple
Height: 6-8'

Flowering Almond

Description:  Masses of pink flowers in April adorn this favorite shrub!  Grow in full sun on well-drained acidic soil to bring out it's rich leaf color.  This plant rarely sets fruit.

Prunus x 'Hally Jolivette'
Flowering Cherry

Description:  One of several small sized Cherry trees well suited for today's residential landscapes.  Will grow to a large shrub unless lower branches are removed to form a small tree.  Delicate double pink flowers bloom in spring for about 15-20 days.  Fast growing.  This tree rarely sets red fruits.  Was chosen as a 1994 Gold Medal Plant by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

Japanese Flowering Cherry, Oriental Cherry

Description:  Double pink flowers bloom in May.  Fruit on this tree is rare.  Average growth rate.  This tree rarely fruits.

Description:  Hardiest of all purple leaf types, Newport has light bronze-purple new growth that changes to purple in summer.  Pale pink to almost white flowers bloom in spring.

Description:  Weeping gray brown branches hold masses of pink flowers in late April.  Growth rate is extremely fast.

Description:  A beautiful vigorously growing weeping cherry with double pink flowers that cascade down the stems.  The leaves stay a glossy green throughout the growing season.

White Weeping Cherry

Description:  White flowers bloom in late April on this petite weeping tree that grows to a natural fountain shape.  A better choice than pink weeping for smaller, tighter spaces.

Thundercloud Flowering Plum, Cherry Plum, Myobalan Plum, Pissard Plum

Description:  Maroon to deep purple foliage retains its color throughout the growing season.  Single, fragrant, pink flowers bloom before leaves.  Use Eight to protect the foliage from Japanese beetles.  Average growth rate. Purple fruits are edible by birds and attract animals.
