Description:

Spirea is best placed in front of other green foliage plants to show the best flower display.   It combines well with ornamental grasses, ferns and other plants with large foliage. 

Considered mostly allergy free.

 

Common Name: Japanese Spirea, Nippon Spirea, Vanhoutte Spirea
Botanical Name: Spiraea
Type: Deciduous shrub
Growth Rate: Average
Form: Rounded or spreading
Soil Preference: Tolerates drought and dry soils and will grow in well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.

Light Requirements: Full sun
Attributes: Good for the rock garden, border or as a ground cover
Pests: None of major concern
Diseases: Fireblight, leaf spot, powdery mildew
Care: Remove spent seed heads and developing seed heads to improve the neat look of the plant.   Fertilize with Holly-tone as recommended.

Description:  A very unique and showy new European Spirea noted for its massive dome shaped blooms, attractive blue foliage and superb autumn colors. The blooms appear from early summer to mid-summer. The pure white blooms lighten up a garden and contrast wonderfully the large deep green leaves. The plant is quite sturdy and it holds its blooms up in a neat fashion.  Use Snow Storm as a specimen or in large masses to create a wonderful effect. Use it in the back of the perennial garden or in the shrub border. This easy to grow plant is reliable flowering and the flower color is consistent regardless of soil  or winter temperatures.

Description:  Vanhoutte Spirea grows to be like an   old-fashioned hedge in a fountain-like or vase-shaped form.  It blooms in a cluster of white flowers in late spring.  The foliage is green with a hint of blue.   Every few years cut back older stems to the ground to rejuvenate growth.
