Old-fashioned
Weigela

Weigela

Description:
Weigela is a small deciduous shrub that grows best in a sunny location with moist soil. The flowers are long and are trumpet-shaped.  In fact, they are a part of the Honeysuckle family! This plant is considered mostly allergy free and causes little or no allergy problems in most people.

Common Name: Old-Fashioned Weigela, Rose Weigela
Botanical Name: Weigela florida
Type: Deciduous Shrub
Soil Preference: This plant tolerates some drought and will grow in dry soil but prefers a well-drained/loamy, sandy or clay soil with a pH of acidic to alkaline (6.8 - 7.7) soil.
Light Requirements: Full Sun
Attributes: Mostly Pest tolerant; attracts butterflies & hummingbirds, good foliage color for landscapes
Pests: Japanese Beetle may sometimes feed on Weigela foliage.
Diseases: Leaf spot sometimes attacks Weigela.  Bacterial crown gall may cause round growths on the lower stems.
Care: Prune after flowering if necessary.  Fertilize with Plant-tone or Holly-tone approximately April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, August 15th & October 30th.  Keep granular fertilizers off foliage and away from stems and trunks.  Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.

Planting Instructions: Trees & Shrubs
