Trumpet
Vine

Campsis

U6H445.jpg (18084 bytes)

Description:

Trumpet Vines will quickly climb to 30' or more when given adequate support!  The brilliant trumpet-shaped flowers of orange or red bloom in summer.  Training is easy but regular pinching and pruning is necessary to become established.  This plant is also difficult to get rid of and will climb up to nearby trees and houses.  We suggest cutting it to the ground each spring before new growth emerges.

Note:  Be careful when pruning because some people react to the foliage with skin inflammation.  (All or parts of this plant are poisonous)   Pollen causes some allergy problems for some people.

Common Name: Trumpet Vine, Trumpet Creeper
Botanical Name: Campsis
Type: Flowering Perennial Vine
Soil Preference: This plant tolerates some drought and some varieties will tolerate occasional wetness and salt.  Suitable growing conditions are well drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils with a pH of acidic to alkaline (6.8 - 7.7)
Light Requirements: Full sun to light shade.  Best flowering and growth is in full sun.
Attributes: Attracts birds, attracts butterflies
Pests: None serious
Diseases: Sometimes Powdery Mildew will plague the leaves of this plant
Care: Dead-head spent blooms.  Cut back to basal foliage in the spring and fall.  Propagation is from cuttings, division and seeds.  Best propagation time is fall or spring.

Planting Instructions: Trees & Shrubs
