Wisteria

Wisteria sinensis JFSchmidt.jpg (9804 bytes)

Description:

A fast growing, strong vine that can reach 30' or more!!  It is best to be trained on to a very sturdy structure because the plant can become extremely heavy.   It's main feature are the drooping clusters of violet, blue, pink or white flowers in spring.   Greenish/brown fruits shaped like pea pods appear after the blooms and are quite attractive

Common Name: Japanese Wisteria, Chinese Wisteria
Botanical Name: Wisteria
Type: Deciduous vine
Soil Preference: Tolerates drought and occasional wetness and will grow in dry to moist soils but prefers well-drained/loamy, sandy or clay soils with a pH of acidic to alkaline (above or below 7.0)
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade
Attributes: Good for naturalizing.  Wisteria sinensis attracts butterflies and serves as a butterfly nectar source and a host for butterfly larvae.
Pests: Black vine weevil
Diseases: Crown gall, leaf spots, powdery mildew
Care: All or parts of this plant (seeds) are poisonous.   Pruning is needed to contain this very vigorous vine.  Fertilize with Plant-tone, Holly-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer. (Little fertilizer is usually needed for this plant)

Planting Instructions: Trees & Shrubs
