Landscape Designer

Published 1-28-2024

Job Description

As a landscape designer at one of Akron’s largest garden centers, you will use your artistic talent and plant knowledge to create one-of-a-kind landscape designs and estimates. Meeting with customers to present and explain in detail the finished design with accompanying estimate will be a daily occurrence during our busiest seasons.  Engaging and understanding your customer is very important in order to discover their landscape needs through clear and pleasant communication.

The design process will include quick hand drawings to more elaborate designs with softscape and hardscape features using landscape design software.  We strive to stay away from the so-called “builders specials” and mass produced, cookie-cutter landscapes.  In order to achieve a custom design, we require you to design with materials from the greenhouse and nursery yard. Our plant selection is vast and extensive including common and rare trees, shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, roses and annuals.  You will need a broad knowledge of plant material and their requirements for growth in order to complete an appropriate design.  The plants will need to be spaced correctly in order to anticipate future growth.

The custom design will then be transferred to a quote using formulas to correctly calculate installation costs.  A consultation with the sub-contractor may be necessary at this point for any changes related to hardscapes.  Calculations for soil, fertilizer broadcast rates and mulch may be necessary.

You will need to work closely with our subcontractor installers to set additional pricing, a probable install date and to solve any problems that arise with the implementation of the design. A visit to the site may be necessary for review and answer customer questions during the install process.

After the installation is complete you must follow-up with the customer with a personal thank you card and satisfaction survey.

In slower times of the year, you may be required to work on the sales floor or assist with other projects.

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. College degree in landscape architecture or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year customer service experience is preferred.

  • Must be able to bend, stoop and lift up to 50 lbs. with reasonable accommodation and perform tasks that may require prolonged standing and sitting.
  • The candidate must also possess the ability to work in both inside and outside environmental conditions and bear the physical ability to move large, bulky and/or heavy merchandise.
