Amsonia


Description:

A plant that is gaining much popularity because of its thread-like foliage and star-shaped blue flowers with no known insect or disease problems!  Amsonia will do best in full sun and will re-bloom if spent flowers are removed before they set seed.  Also serves as a butterfly nectar source.  Looks great with Eupatorium, Cotinus, and Callicarpa.
 
Common Name: Narrow-leaf Blue Star, Arkansas Amsonia
Botanical Name: Amsonia
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Will grow in moist soil but prefers well-drained or loamy soils with a neutral pH.
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade
Attributes: Attracts butterflies and serves as a butterfly nectar source.  Great for naturalizing
Pests: None serious
Diseases: None serious
Good Companion Plants: Japanese Anemone, Aster, Blue Mist Shrub, Coral Bells, Autumn Fern, Coral Bells, Hosta, Tall Bearded Iris, Plumbago, Rose Mallow, Stonecrop
Care: Propagate by cuttings or division in spring or summer.   Fertilize with Plant-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer.

Description:  This southern native has star-shaped sky blue flowers in spring and thread-like foliage which takes on a stunning golden color in fall.   Amsonia forms a neat bush which creates a nice contrast with broadleaf plants like Begonias.

Foliage Color: Green, orange and yellow fall color
