Goat's
Beard

Aruncus

Description:

An outstanding specimen plant for the partially shaded garden. Looking much like a very large white Astilbe, Goat's Beard has similar foliage and feathery, creamy white flower plumes up to 1 ft. long.  This herbaceous perennial can easily take the place of a shrub in the garden; it will grow about the same size and have the same shape as a dwarf Viburnum. Though Aruncus tends to be a slow-grower the first couple of seasons, once it is established it puts on a fabulous show year after year. Make sure it has plenty of room to grow when you first plant it; transplanting this species is a very difficult task.

Common Name: Goat's Beard
Botanical Name: Aruncus dioicus
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Moist, well-drained soil.
Light Requirements: Full sun; prefers partial to full shade.  If grown in deep shade, plants tend to have a more open habit and bloom sparsely.
Attributes: Cut flower or foliage, grows in shade, deer resistant
Pests: None known
Diseases: None known
Good Companion Plants: Bergenia, Bleeding Heart, Heartleaf Brunnera, Cardinal Flower, Miscanthus, Hosta, Siberian Iris, Black Snakeroot
Care: Cut back dead foliage in spring. Fertilize with Plant-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer every few weeks during the growing season (see water & fertilizer schedule)
