Blue False
Indigo

Baptisia

Description:

Dainty blue flowers and the bushy, shrub-like foliage make this plant excellent for naturalizing or to be used in the woodland garden.  Baptisia  does not like to be transplanted because of it's long tap root. Serves as a host for butterfly larvae.

Common Name: Blue False Indigo, Blue Wild Indigo
Botanical Name: Baptisia australis
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Tolerates drought and will grow in dry to moist soils but prefers well-drained, loamy or sandy soils with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline (less than 6.8 - 7.0)
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade
Attributes: Attracts birds and butterflies and is suitable for cut and dried flowers.   Good for naturalizing or in the border.
Pests: Rabbits may chew on foliage
Diseases: Leaf spot, powdery mildew, rust
Good Companion Plants: Foxglove, Hardy Geranium, Lady's Mantle, Lupines, Peony, Perennial Salvia, Sundrop, Hibiscus, Miscanthus, Helianthus, Pennisetum and Rudbeckia
Care: Cut back to 6 inches in the fall and remove the dead foliage in spring.  May need staking to maintain it's form. Deadhead after blooming.   Does not like to be transplanted.  Fertilize with Plant-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer.

Baptisia 'Starlite Prairie Blues'
Blue False Indigo
zones 4-9

Description:  This beautiful new native cultivar is a selection from a controlled cross of B. australis x bracteata made by Dr. Jim Ault of the Chicago Botanic Garden. One of the earliest Baptisia to bloom, this plant produces very impressive 24 inch long flower spikes with densely spaced vivid violet buds and cool periwinkle flowers with butter cream keels in late spring to early summer. The spikes extend well-above the attractive blue-green foliage and tend to arch gracefully outward as they age. In fall, the seed pods turn charcoal black and make an interesting addition to fall bouquets. Starlite Prairieblues™ has a vase-shaped habit when it is young, maturing into a broadly rounded shrub-like plant. It is reportedly quick to mature compared to other Baptisias.
Bloom Color: Blue
Bloom Time: Spring and summer
Foliage Color: Blue-green
