Foxglove
Digitalis

Description:
Most Foxglove varieties are described as a short-lived perennial rather than a biennial.  Foxgloves forms large rosettes of downy, green, oblong leaves from which numerous flower spikes emerge. This plant looks especially nice when planted along fences, at the wood's edge, or in large containers.

The name Digitalis is latin for "finger of a glove", which refers to the shape of the flowers. This is an important medicinal plant; the powerful drug digitalin is derived from it, which is used as a heart stimulant to treat heart disease.

Common Name: Foxglove
Botanical Name: Digitalis
Type: Short-lived Perennial or Biennial
Soil Preference: Foxglove prefers acidic, moist, well-drained soil that is enriched with humus.
Light Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade
Attributes: Rabbit resistant, deer resistant, good cut flower
Pests: --
Diseases: --
Good Companion Plants: Astilbe, Bergenia, Coral Bells, Corydalis, Delphinium, Hardy Geranium, Tall Bearded Iris, Black Snakeroot
Care: Keeping this plant watered will result in better flowering and healthier foliage.  Propagation is recommended by letting the plant self-seed and using the resulting plantlets. It may also be grown from seed, but will take 2 years to flower.  If this plant is deadheaded, there is a much greater chance of it re-blooming.

Fertilize with Plant-tone, Flower-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer.
