Blanket
Flower
Gaillardia

Description:
An easy-to-grow perennial with large, daisy-like blooms of red and red/yellow.  Very similar to Echinacea (Coneflower).   Gaillardia will look great near a walkway, path, porch or in the front of the perennial garden!

Common Name: Blanket Flower
Botanical Name: Gaillardia
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Though they will perform best in moist soils, they are highly drought tolerant. Do not enrich the soil with compost or other rich ingrediants when planting this perennial. It does best in poor, loose soils and does not tolerate heavy clay.
Light Requirements: Gaillardia requires full sun and well-drained soil in order to prosper. Given too much shade, the plants tend to flop over.
Attributes: Deer resistant, attracts butterflies, good cut flower, good for naturalizing; serve as hosts for butterfly larvae
Pests: Aphids, beetles, borers, leaf hoppers, mites, thrips
Diseases: Leaf spot, powdery mildew, root rot, rust
Good Companion Plants: Black Eyed-Susan, Daylily, Gayfeather, Miscanthus (Maiden Grass), Tall Bearded Iris, Perennial Salvia, Tickseed, Yarrow, Stoke's Aster, Caryopteris, Balloon Flower
Care: Plants may be divided every 2-3 years in either spring or fall and are also easily grown from seed.  Do not remove the foliage from this plant until late fall as this helps protect the plant.  Cut back in August to encourage re-growth for better winter survival and a second blooming in fall. Dead-head after flowering and cut back to basal foliage in spring. Divide in spring if necessary.  Fertilize with Plant-tone or a water soluble fertilizer according to package directions.  Always use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.
