Japanese
Barberry

Berberis

U5Q475.jpg (24849 bytes)

Description:

Japanese Barberry can easily be sheared to be used as a hedge plant and it is useful for barrier plantings too since it is thorny!  It tolerates most light exposures and soils but purple-leaved varieties will turn green in the shade.   Persistent red fruits form in fall along with the red, orange and yellow foliage color.  This plant is considered mostly allergy free and causes little or no allergy problems in most people.  This plant is thorny!

Common Name: Japanese Barberry
Botanical Name: Berberis
Type: Deciduous shrub
Soil Preference: This plant tolerates some drought and a little salt.  This plant will grow in dry soil. Suitable soil is well-drained/loamy, sandy or clay. The pH preference is an acidic to alkaline (less than 6.8 to more than 7.7) soil.
Light Requirements: Full sun
Attributes: Nice rounded shape, considered to be mostly allergy free, pest tolerant
Pests: Scale occassionally infests the twigs, otherwise, pest tolerant.
Diseases: None serious
Care: Fertilize with Holly-tone or Plant-tone approximately April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, August 15th & October 30th.  Keep granular fertilizers off foliage and away from stems and trunks.  Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.
