Description:

A fine textured evergreen shrub that tolerates pruning shearing well.  One of our favorites to be used as a border or hedge.  Boxwood only requires well-drained soil and prefers shading and wind protection in winter if grown on an exposed site.   Pollen can cause significant allergies in certain people.

Botanical Name: Buxus
Type: Evergreen Shrub
Soil Preference: Tolerates some drought and will grow in dry soil but prefers well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline (6.8-7.7)
Light Requirements: Sun, Partial Shade
Attributes: Nice winter color, deer resistant
Pests: Leaf miner, spider mites, nematodes, scale
Diseases: Root rot, sensitive to damage from ozone air pollution
Care: Fertilize with Holly-tone approximately April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, August 15th & October 30th.  Keep granular fertilizers off foliage and away from stems and trunks.  Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.

Buxus x 'Glencoe' (Chicagoland Green®)
Boxwood
Description:  This Boxwood retains its nice green color in winter better than others and is faster growing than the popular 'Green Velvet'.  This cultivar is a Chicago Botanical Garden selection and was chosen for its cold tolerance.
Bloom Color: Green (inconspicious)
Bloom Time: Spring
Foliage Color: Green, yellow fall color
Height: 3-4'
Spread: 3-5'

Buxus microphylla var. koreana
'Green Gem'
Boxwood
Description:  A slow growing, broadleaf evergreen shrub noted for its rounded, globular shape and winter hardiness.  Foliage is glossy dark green and will maintain its color well into winter.  Doesn't require pruning.
Bloom Color: Green (inconspicious)
Bloom Time: Spring
Foliage Color: Green
Height: 2'

Buxus x 'Green Mountain'
Boxwood
Description:  It will grow naturally to a more pyramidal shape and can easily be shaped into a cone.  Also bears strong branches with a round, larger green leaf.  Slow growth rate: reaches a height of 3' in 10 years.
Bloom Color: Green (inconspicious)
Bloom Time: Spring
Foliage Color: Green, yellow fall color
Height: 3-5' (to 3' in 10 years, can grow to 8')
Spread: 2-4'

Buxus x 'Green Velvet'
Boxwood
Description:  One of the best selections for northern locations because it will hold its green color well in the winter sun and cold conditions.  It will grow naturally to a semi-spherical shape but lends itself well to shaping.  It is best suited to small borders or hedges or as an edging along a path.  Grows slowly, 3' in 10 years.  
Bloom Color: Green (inconspicious)
Bloom Time: Spring
Foliage Color: Green, yellow in fall
Height: 3-4'  (to 3' in 10 years)
Spread: 3-4'

Buxus microphylla var. koreana
Boxwood
Description:  An exceptionally cold hardy Boxwood that can take -20 to -25o F.  The small, round, green leaves turn a darker shade at the onset of winter and then turn yellowish brown until spring.  Somewhat loose and open in habit and twice as wide at maturity.

Foliage Color: Spring
Height: 3-4'

Description:  A very hardy variety of English Boxwood with lustrous, dark green foliage and a compact growth habit.  
Bloom Color: Green (inconspicious)
Bloom Time: Spring
Foliage Color: Dark Green

'Winter Beauty'
Boxwood
Description:  While most Boxwoods have attractive foliage in winter, some Korean types are known for displaying unattractive brown discoloration in winter.   But, 'Winter Beauty' bears a nice bronze color what is considered to be attractive.   A mounded-form Boxwood.
