Description:

A slow growing tree making one of the finest specimen trees of all available in North America.  There are reports of poisoning by people who have eaten the seeds.  Pollen can cause significant allergies.

 

Common Name: Beech
Botanical Name: Fagus sylvatica, Fagus grandiflora
Type: Deciduous Tree
Soil Preference: This plant tolerates some drought, ozone and a little salt.   Prefers well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils with a  pH of acidic to slightly alkaline (6.8-7.7)
Light
Requirements:
Full sun for sylvatica types, Full Sun to shade for grandiflora type
Attributes: pest tolerant
Pests: Aphid, borers, caterpillars, scale
Diseases: Usually none serious provided soil is not compacted and is well-drained.  Sometimes Powdery mildew is seen and causes a white coating on the leaves.

Care:

Only prune trees to remove broken twigs or disease infested branches.  Fertilize with Holly-tone approximately April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, August 15th & October 30th.  Keep granular fertilizers off foliage and away from stems and trunks.  Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.

Description:  A sturdy, slow growing, imposing tree of gray bark. A generous layer of mulch will help the tree root system develop to its fullest. Leaves often remain on the tree through the winter. Leaves and seeds are poisonous if ingested.

Description:  Lower branches hang to the ground but can be pruned up.   Dark green summer leaves with a gold-bronze fall color.  Leaves are deeply lobed and finely cut giving the tree a lacy, feathery, ferny appearance.  Other plants will not grow well under this tree.

Description:  Dark purple, almost black-red leaves on a weeping tree of great beauty.  It forms a strong leader then weeps as gracefully as a swan's neck and all the branches weep straight down.  This is a very narrow tree.
