Liriodendron


Description:
Liriodendron, the state tree of Tennessee and Indiana, is fairly easy to grow as long as it's soils stays moist and acidic.  Drought conditions may cause premature defoliation.  This tree serves as food for the tiger swallow tail (a yellow and black butterfly)

This plant is considered mostly allergy free. 

 

Common Name: Tulip Tree, Tulip Poplar, Yellow Poplar
Botanical Name: Liriodendron
Type: Deciduous Tree
Growth Rate: Average
Soil Preference: Tolerates drought and wet soils but will grow best in moist, well-drained soils with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.   Liriodendron is sensitive to ozone and air pollution.
Light Requirements: Full sun
Attributes: Pest tolerant, attracts birds & butterflies, likes moist soils
Pests: Aphids, scale
Diseases: Canker, powdery mildew, sooty mold, verticillium wilt; (air pollution)
Care: Fertilize with Holly-tone as recommended.

Liriodendron flower.jpg (19575 bytes)Description:  A large tree with yellow/green foliage turning more yellow in fall.  Noted for it's tulip-like white and yellow flowers in late spring.  Good planted in open spaces and moist soils or the side of a pond.  The seed produced on the Tulip Tree is a favorite of the cardinal.

Foliage Color: Greenish yellow; yellow fall color
