Ornamental PEAR

One of the most popular specimen and street flowering trees!  They are shallow-rooted and will tolerate most soil types.   They are also pollution resistant and will tolerate dry to wet soil.  In spring, they put on a nice show of white flowers.

Common Name: Pear, Flowering Pear
Botanical Name: Pyrus
Growth Rate: Fast
Type: Deciduous Tree
Soil Preference: Tolerates drought and will grow in dry, well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soil.  Prefers a pH of acidic to alkaline
Light Requirements: Full Sun
Attributes: Screen, specimen, street tree, attracts birds
Pests: Aphids, scale, borer, ambrosia beetle
Diseases: Fire blight (some varieties are resistant, they are noted below)
Care: Prune after flowering if necessary or to improve tree's shape.  Fertilize with Holly-tone April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, August 15th & October 30th.   Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.

Pyrus calleryana 'Aristocrat'
Flowering Pear, Callery Pear
zones 5-9

Description:  A pyramidal Pear with white flowers in early May.  Purplish-red fall color.  Broader than other Callery Pears.  This variety is quite adaptable and is well suited as a street tree or in other restricted soil spaces.  The more dominant trunk and open form of Aristocrat makes it less susceptible to wind damage than Bradford.  Brownish tan fruits do develop but they are inconspicuous.
Bloom Color: White
Bloom Time: May
Foliage Color: Green
Height: 25-50'
Spread: 25-50'

Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford'
Flowering Pear
zones 5-9

Description:  Green summer foliage turns to red, purple, orange and yellow by fall. White flowers bloom early spring.  'Bradford' shows the best resistance to fire blight in studies, however, because of inferior branch structure, they tend to "fall apart" during storms once they reach 20-30 years old.   Brownish tan fruits do develop but they are inconspicuous. **because of it's week wood, we no longer sell this cultivar
Bloom Color: White
Bloom Time: May
Foliage Color: Green
Height: 40-45'
Spread: 35-40'

Pyrus calleryana 'Cleveland Select'
Flowering Pear
zones 5-9

Description:  Bears more white blooms than most other types. Forms an upright, columnar, ovate shaped tree.  Green summer foliage turns to red-purple by fall.  This pear has a superior branch structure that withstands ice and wind damage better than Bradford.  It is also fruitless and has few pest problems.  It will also tolerate urban conditions and heavy clay soils.  Our favorite flowering Pear! AKA 'Chanticleer'
Bloom Color: White
Bloom Time: May
Foliage Color: Green
Height: 20-30'
Spread: 15'
