Description:

Stewartias bear camellia-like white flowers in July through August.  Mature trees have polished, peeling bark and fine autumn color.  Prefers lime free soil in a sheltered, lightly shaded area with protection from spring frosts when young.  This tree has year-round appeal.

 

Common Name: Japanese Stewartia
Botanical Name: Stewartia pseudocamellia
Type: Deciduous Tree
Soil Preference: This tree tolerates drought and occasional wetness but prefers well-drained, sandy or clay soils.  The pH preference is acidic to slightly alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full Sun to Full Shade
Attributes: Pest Tolerant.  Flowers when few other plants are in flower.
Pests: None of major concern
Diseases: None of major concern
Care: Pruning is not necessary.  Provide a loose, acid soil for best performance.  Fertilize with Plant-tone approximately April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, August 15th & October 30th.  Keep granular fertilizers off foliage and away from stems and trunks.  Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.

Description: Just like the species except with more brilliant red and yellow fall color.  Also bears profuse quantities of larger blooms and bark color that is brighter in intensity.
