Snowbell

Description:

An excellent small tree with delicate white or pink flowers and interesting bark.   This tree may cause a significant number of bees when in bloom so be careful when viewing this tree up close.  The roots are grow deep but are non-aggressive.

 

Common Name: Japanese Snowbell, Snowbell, Snowdrop Tree
Botanical Name: Styrax
Type: Deciduous tree
Soil Preference: Will grow in dry soils but well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils is also suitable with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline (less than 7.7)
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade
Attributes: Pest tolerant
Pests: None serious.  Ambrosia beetle and borers may sometimes become a problem on stressed or dying plants
Diseases: None serious
Care: Locate this tree in an area protected from winter winds.   Fertilize with Holly-tone as recommended.

Description: A lovely, small, low branched tree which develops a rounded to broad rounded crown and a distinct horizontal appearance.  The dainty white flowers bloom spring and early summer.

Description:  This weeping form of Snowbell bears clusters of white, bell-shaped lightly fragrant flowers with showy yellow stamens.   The leaves are oblong and glossy dark green and will turn yellow to red in fall.  Will grow 12" per year.

Description:  Just as lovely as the white flowering form, 'Pink Chimes' bears clusters of pink bell-shaped flowers from May to June.  The leaves are dark green and will turn red in fall then drop to the ground.  Grows 8-10" per year.
