Description:
An evergreen tree or shrub with soft, graceful foliage making it one of the most beautiful conifers.

 
Common Name: Canadian Hemlock
Botanical Name: Tsuga canadensis
Type: Evergreen Tree, Pyramidal
Soil Preference: Acidic, well-drained
Light Requirements: Sun, Partial Shade
Attributes: Soft and gracefully pyramidal in youth with tapering trunk becoming pendulously pyramidal with age.  An excellent subject for moist, well drained acidic soils, rock or sandy soils. 
Pests: Scale, Weevil, Mite.  Insects increase in number on plants fertilized with too much nitrogen.  Consider applying a labeled pesticide before applying nitrogen fertilizer. 
Diseases: Root Rot, Canker.
Care: Plant in sheltered locations, avoid windswept sites and polluted conditions.  Use peat moss and Ironite when planting.  Fertilize with Holly-tone April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, August 15th & October 30th.  Prune out dead branches and maintain tree health to prevent insect infestation.  Do not let these plants dry out!!   Keep granular fertilizers off foliage and away from stems and trunks.  Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.
