Description:

Heath is a ground-hugging plant often considered to be a small shrub.  It is identified by it's needle-like foliage and small, bell-shaped flowers ranging from white to pink to purple to deep red.  Avoid planting in heavy wet soils.    (Pollen can cause mild allergy in certain people.)

 

Common Name: Heath, Winter Heath, Bell Heather
Botanical Name: Erica
Type: Evergreen Shrub
Soil Preference: Darleyensis types will grow in moist soil, but prefers sandy soil.  Carnea types will grow in moist soil but prefers well-drained, loamy or sandy soils.  Cineria types will grow in moist soil but prefers well-drained soil.
Light Requirements: Full sun or light shade
Attributes: Suitable for cut and dried flowers
Pests: Scale
Diseases: Powdery mildew, rot, rust.
Care: It is recommended to mulch before the onset of winter to protect from damage caused by the cold temperatures and wind.

Erica carnea 'Bell's Extra Special'
Winter Heath
Description:  Purple-blue flowers January-May.  Whisky colored foliage flecked with orange and gold.  Neat and tidy form.

Light shearing when young will form dense growth; this will help prevent the plant from forming bare wood in the center.  Trim right after bloom is finished.  Prefers a slightly acid to alkaline soil so fertilize with Plant-tone.
Bloom Color: Purple-blue

Foliage Color: Whisky

Winter Heath
Description:  Shell pink flowers January-May.  Medium green foliage has violet tips in fall.

Light shearing when young will form dense growth; this will help prevent the plant from forming bare wood in the center.  Trim right after bloom is finished.  Prefers a slightly acid to alkaline soil so fertilize with Plant-tone.
