Description: 
A must for the butterfly garden!  This plant is late to break dormancy, so be patient in the spring.  The tuberosa type is sometimes used to make yellow dye.  They also serve as nectar for butterflies and hosts for butterfly larvae.   Looks nice planted with Solidago, Heliopsis, Helianthus and Penstemon
Common Name: Milkweed, Silkweed, Butterfly Flower
Botanical Name: Asclepias
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Will tolerate some drought and little salt and will also grow in dry to moist soils.  Prefers well-drained soils with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full Sun, Light Shade
Attributes: Drought tolerant, attracts butterflies; Good for container plantings, rock gardens, borders, massing and specimens
Pests: Mites, aphids, beetles, caterpillars, leaf miners, scales and thrips.
Diseases: Leaf spots, rust, crown rot, root rot, cucumber mosaic virus.
Good Companion Plants: Aster, Campanula, Butterfly Bush, Coreopsis, Globe Thistle, Mullein, Red Valerian, Perennial Salvia, Speedwell
Care: Cut back now and then to encourage a fuller plant.

Description:  This native Butterfly Weed has brilliant orange-red flowers that are excellent for cutting and very attractive to bees and hummingbirds, too!  It is very late to break dormancy and some patience is necessary.  Established plants have long taproots and are difficult to transplant.
