Heartleaf
Bergenia

Bergenia

Description:

The shiny, evergreen, cabbage-like leaves of Bergenia have a unique leathery appearance that is really eye-catching. This plant gets its common name, "Pig Squeak", from the sound the leaf makes when rubbed between two fingers.   From early to late spring, bright red flowers appear in clusters on thick stems just above the foliage. These flowers and the leaves are both long-lasting when cut for bouquets.  During the fall and winter months, the leaves take on remarkable reddish-bronze hues which remain until spring when they turn back to green. Any tattered leaves can be removed at that time.

Common Name: Saxifraga, Heartleaf Bergenia, Pig Squeak
Botanical Name: Bergenia
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Performs best in rich, moisture-retentive soil.  It dislikes heavy soils and standing water.
Light Requirements: Thrives in almost any sunlight, but partial shade is best.
Attributes: Deer resistant, rabbit resistant, evergreen, ground cover, good edging plant, good rock garden plant
Pests: --
Diseases: --
Good Companion Plants: Aster, Blue Star, Columbine, Autumn Fern, Japanese Painted Fern, Forget-Me-Not, Hardy Geranium, Lungwort, Cushion Spurge, Starflower, Sweet Woodruff
