Coral
Bells

Heuchera

Description:

Coral Bells begin blooming in early June and don't stop until the end of August.  We suggest dead-heading to prolong the bloom season.  Will grow in any well-drained alkaline soil.  Even though they tolerate a couple hours of shade, best results are achieved when grown in full sun.  These plants look good with Artemisia, ornamental grasses or low ground covers; Lamium, or Lysimachia.

Common Name: Alum Root, Coral Bells, Rock Geranium
Botanical Name: Heuchera micrantha 'Palace Purple'
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: This plant tolerated drought and will grow in moist soil but prefers a well-drained, loamy or sandy soil with a pH of neutral (7.0)
Light Requirements: Sun to Partial Shade
Attributes: 1991 Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association.  Best used as a border plant, specimen or ground cover.
Pests: Japanese Beetles, Root and Vine Weevils
Diseases: Anthracnose, Gray Mold, Bacterial Leaf Spot
Good Companion Plants: Astilbe, Barrenwort, Corydalis, Autumn Fern, Foamy Bells, Hardy Geranium, Carex, Hakonechloa, Hosta, Lady's Mantle, Foamflower
Care: Fertilize every 4 months with slow-release Osmocote or fertilize every few weeks with Plant-tone or Miracle Gro.  Dead-head spent blooms.  In the spring, remove dead foliage only; after final blooming, but back.   In areas of hot, humid summers, grow this long lived perennial in partial shade and avoid hot afternoon sun.
