Blazing Star
Liatris

Description:

A group of hardy native American plants that are well worth giving a spot in the garden!   Their flowers provide a strong vertical effect, and their color is brilliant in shades of blue, purple, pink and white.  They are unusual in that their flower spikes are open from the top down rather than in the reverse, which is more common.

Common Name: Gayfeather, Blazing Star, Spiked Blazing Star
Botanical Name: Liatris
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Tolerates drought and dry to moist soils but prefers sandy or clay soils with a pH of neutral to alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full sun
Attributes: Attracts butterflies, attracts birds, good cut flower, deer resistant, good dried flower
Pests: None serious.
Diseases: Root rot, stem rot, wilt, leaf spot, Anthracnose, gray mold, bacterial blight
Good Companion Plants: Liatris goes well with Ornamental Grasses, Black-Eyed Susan, Coreopsis, Coneflower and Silver Mound.
Care: Dead-head spent flowers after blooming and cut back to ground level in fall.  Divide in spring if necessary.  Seeds are produced in late summer.  Fertilize with Plant-tone or a water soluble fertilizer as recommended.
