Hardy Aster
Aster

Description:
Asters make terrific accents to fall gardens.  They look great with ornamental grasses and the changing colors of the trees.  They perform best in rich, evenly moist soil in full sun.  Be sure to give them lots of room to grow as good air circulation is vital to prevent powdery mildew. If pinched back in mid-July, the plants will be heavier blooming and probably will not need staking.

Common Name: Aster, Bushy Aster, New England Aster, New York Aster, Calico Aster
Botanical Name: Aster
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Prefers well-drained soils with a pH of neutral to slightly alkaline.  Will tolerate drought and will grow in moist soils.  Also tolerates loamy, sandy or clay soils.
Light Requirements: Full Sun
Attributes: Attracts butterflies; deer resistant; rabbit resitant; fall interest; good cut flower
Pests: Rabbits, whiteflies, thrips, aphids
Diseases: Root rot, wilt, stem blight, leaf spot.
Good Companion Plants: Japanese Anemone, Black-Eyed Susan, Blue Mist Shrub, Boltonia, Butterfly Bush, Purple Coneflower, Ornamental Grass, Silver Lace Vine, Silver Mound or Sedum.
Care:

Pinch back mid-July for a heavier bloom and stronger stems.  Plants should be divided every couple of years in the spring to maintain their health and vigor.

Planting Instructions:  Perennials
