Pinks, Carnations |
| Botanical
Name: |
Dianthus deltoides, Dianthus
barbatus, Dianthus gratianopolitanus |
| Type: |
Perennial |
| Soil
Preference: |
Dianthus grow best in loose,
well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Lime can be added to the
soil if it is naturally acidic to raise the pH. If planting area is
hot and dry, regular watering during prolonged dry spells will be necessary.
However, they are tolerant of short periods of dryness. |

Requirements: |
Dianthus can be grown in full
sun or part shade. |
| Attributes: |
Fragrant, border, edging,
mass plant, drought tolerant, salt tolerant, attracts butterflies, deer
resistant |

Plants: |
Campanula,
Gaillardia, Coral Bells,
Hardy Geranium, Hens & Chicks, Lamb's Ear,
Tickseed |
| Care: |
Cut the spent flowers to maintain neatness of
the plant and to promote growth. Do a thorough clean-up in the
fall to prevent pest and disease problems, and add a layer of mulch to
protect the evergreen foliage. As soon as the weather begins to warm up,
remove all of this mulch to prevent crown rot. Dianthus can be propagated by
division every few years in early spring, just as the new growth begins to
appear. This is recommended because Dianthus tends to be a short-lived
perennial otherwise. Planting Instructions: Perennials

'Eastern Star'
Star Series Carnations/Pinks
zones 5-9
|
| Description:
Large, red flowers with raisin-red centers have a velvety appearance which
is highlighted by subtle wisps of soft pink along the edges. Even more
wonderful, they exude the spicy scent of cloves. Though budding is most
prolific in early summer, plants will rebloom in the fall if spent flowers
are removed. The evergreen foliage is a glaucous blue-green, forming compact
mounds about 7" tall and wide. The Dianthus 'Star' series is a recent
Plant Haven introduction from breeder John Whetman of HR Whetman and Son in
Devon, England. Though they are described as alpine dianthus, they are
actually more complex and are an improvement over the species. |

'Heart Attack'
(barbatus)
Perennial Sweet William
zones 4-9
|
| Description:
Very deep crimson red, carnation-like flowers really make a statement up
against the glossy, dark green, lance-like foliage. The leaves are deep red
when they emerge in spring. This cultivar has proven to have more perennial
characteristics than others in the species which are biennial. It originates
from southern Europe. This genus prefers full sun to partial shade with
somewhat alkaline, well-drained soil. For the best appearance, clean up the
previous year's foliage in the spring. Deadheading the lateral buds will
prolong the blooming period to 6-8 weeks. |
