Description:

A dainty little plant good for the border or the woodland garden.  These plants do best in full sun and infertile, well-drained soil.

 

Common Name: Evening Primrose, Mexican Evening Primrose, Showy Primrose
Botanical Name: Oenothera
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Will grow in dry to moist soil but prefers well-drained/loamy or sandy soils with a neutral pH.
Light Requirements: Full sun
Attributes: Naturalizing
Pests: Leafhoppers
Diseases: Leaf spot, cucumber mosaic virus
Good Companion Plants: Balloon Flower, Dwarf Bellflower, Festuca, Perennial Salvia, Calamagrostis, Yarrow
Care: Dead-head after blooming.  Fertilize with Plant-tone, Flower-tone or a water-soluble fertilizer.

Oenothera kunthiana 'Glowing Magenta'
Evening Primrose

Description:  Fuzzy buds open to deep pink, 4-petaled flowers from early through late summer on this unusually compact selection. The narrow, lance-shaped, dark green leaves form a low, prostrate, spreading mound. The first year, this plant grows about 6" tall, but it can double that height by the second year. Use this plant in rock gardens, near the front of the border, or in containers.

Description:  Huge, showy flowers sometimes reaching 4-5" in diameter of pure yellow bloom each evening.  The bizarre seed pods are also huge.
